Lotus Eleven Found

A 1957 Lotus S2 LeMans version. It's been in storage since Nov 1972. It's complete minus the engine. I've already been in contact with the Historic Lotus Register. Vic ( UK ) Jay (US) . The are working on determining which one this is. The number plate is long since gone:

A chance of a lifetime, to be able to race the Eleven on the famous 'Circuit de Sarthe',
a dream come true!

The Eleven raced here both day and night. Co-driver Don Hands and myself are very fortunate to have been able to race in such a beautiful car on this truly fabulous, evocative circuit.
Our thanks go to the organisers, Patrick and Sylvia Peter of SAVH for a wonderful opportunity.

My conversation with David Abbott about John Gray and his Lotus Eleven in early July 2004 went something like this……

David Abbott: ‘Fancy driving at the August Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb meeting?’
Me: ’Yeah of course - what in?’ thinking this was some kind of wind-up.
DA: ‘John Gray’s Lotus Eleven, he’s on holiday and can’t make it but has promised the car for a Lotus parade’…..a few moments of stunned silence
Me: ’Wow – Yes!’ - Simon Braithwaite.

Race report

This was an exciting race and the car ran well. My best lap was a 1.12.4 which is good considering I was only using 6500 RPM. Towards the end of the race I had a good time with Hugo Shipley in his Climax Engined Lotus Six, which goes very well. We finished close together and a nice shot of us both appears in the VSCC report in the Quarterly Magazine.

Race report

What a super circuit Oulton Park is. I love the place. I started alongside the Bocar and managed to work my way up to 10 th overall at the finish. I used 7000RPM which gave the car a little more speed down the straights. My best lap time was 2.12.2, not bad until you see that Malcolm Ricketts achieved a lap time some 6 seconds quicker! Well done to Malcolm.

What a super meeting this is! Without doubt, one of the very best in the ‘Club' calendar. The mix of cars is always excellent and each race is in the true spirit of a sporting event.

The Formula Libre Race was great fun. I had a good dice with several of the cars in the field and finished up in the last couple of laps dicing with another Lotus Eleven.

In previous years there have been more single seaters to race with which has been really great. Racing with a 250F ‘Masser' is always fun.

Congratulations to BDC, long may it continue.

Malcolm Ricketts - this the ex Alan Stacey car, so it has some really interesting history.

Richard Fewster - This car is fitted with a full race Coventry Climax FWA engine and close ratio 4 speed BMC gearbox.The car was imported into Australia from England in 1958 by Jon Leighton, son of the founder of Leighton Constructions
